PROJECT OVERVIEW

Sims Street Bridge Repairs

Sterling Infrastructure delivered coordinated bridge repair works on Sims Street Bridge crossing the Maribyrnong River, managing construction across Maribyrnong and Melbourne Council boundaries. The project utilised staged construction methodology with elevated work platforms, implementing comprehensive traffic and pedestrian management plans to minimize disruption while maintaining public access throughout the works.

Sims Street Bridge Repairs

Challenge

The Sims Street Bridge required structural repairs while maintaining continuous access for vehicles and pedestrians crossing the Maribyrnong River. The project presented coordination challenges spanning the boundary between Maribyrnong and Melbourne Councils, requiring alignment with multiple stakeholders and regulatory authorities. The urban location demanded minimising disruption to road users and adjacent footpaths while ensuring safe working conditions for the repair crew.

Solution

Sterling developed a staged construction methodology utilising intermittent road and footpath closures to maintain public access while enabling safe repair works. The approach incorporated elevated work platforms for efficient access to bridge structural elements, reducing the need for extensive scaffolding. A 9-bay parking and laydown area was established to support construction logistics and minimize impact on surrounding streets. The work area was carefully planned with approximately 12-meter sections to allow controlled staging of repairs while managing traffic flow. Sterling coordinated closely with both Maribyrnong and Melbourne Councils to ensure compliance with requirements across jurisdictional boundaries.

Deliverables

Sterling delivered comprehensive bridge repair works including structural remediation and maintenance activities. The project included detailed traffic management planning and implementation for intermittent road closures, pedestrian management plans for footpath closures, and site establishment with designated parking and laydown areas. All works were coordinated with both Maribyrnong and Melbourne Councils to satisfy cross-jurisdictional requirements.

Outcome

The project successfully delivered essential bridge repairs while maintaining public access across the Maribyrnong River. Through careful planning and staged construction, Sterling minimised disruption to road users and pedestrians while achieving required structural remediation outcomes. The coordinated approach across council boundaries demonstrated Sterling's capability in managing complex stakeholder requirements and delivering infrastructure maintenance in constrained urban environments.
