Sterling made safe a 5km walking track through Beechworth Historic Park's gold-mining heritage area by removing access infrastructure and installing barriers with warning signage to protect the public from mineshaft hazards.

Beechworth Historic Park's walking track between Lake Sambell and Lake Kerferd passes through a gold-mining heritage area where unmarked mineshafts present serious hazards to recreational users. The track required a safety solution that addressed the hazard risk while respecting the park's heritage and environmental values.
Following site assessment, Sterling determined that making the track redundant was the appropriate safety response. Works involved removing a steel footbridge over Silver Creek at one end of the track and a staircase at the other end near the holiday park. A barrier with warning signage was installed to alert pedestrians to the hazard risk. The construction approach was coordinated with Parks Victoria to minimise disturbance to heritage fabric and park vegetation.
Removal of the steel footbridge over Silver Creek and the staircase at the holiday park end of the track. Installed barrier and warning signage at each access point. Occupational health and safety management plans for remote-site works. Environmental compliance reporting provided to Parks Victoria on completion.
The walking track was made redundant and the mineshaft hazard risk to the public was resolved. Barriers and warning signage at both ends of the corridor prevent inadvertent access, protecting recreational users of Beechworth Historic Park without compromising the park's heritage character.
